Welcome

Spring Snow in S St Vrain 2017

New Snow in South St. Vrain Canyon. February 2017.

Welcome to my photo site!  I have been sending out photos in E-Mails, but this is getting cumbersome and hard to do.  So, I’m taking a step into the 21st century and moving my photography to the web.

I like to take both photos that are complex with many places for the eye too roam.  This photo is a good example of what I like.  The trees, the water and the rocks are all important to the photograph, but the simplicity of the snow ties them together and in an important way, simplifies the photo.  Without the snow, this photo would be very busy and almost too complex to view.

Next, we have an example of a much simpler composition, but a photo that still has many elements to it.  The photo is simple because it’s got such a strong pattern, but there are many different sagebrush that make up the pattern.  The horizon is quite small, mainly there to show a sense of distance or scale.  If you look carefully at the horizon, you will see tanks an equipment from a natural gas processing plant just under the horizon.  Such is the hazard of photographing in Wyoming.

Next time we’ll talk about photographing in adverse conditions.

It’s All about the Photo

Trail Ridge Panorama

Rocky Mountain National Park from Trail Ridge Road.  September 2016

Does anyone really care how cold it was when you took a photo?  Not really.  They’re interested in looking at the photo.  Does it matter if I tell you that I was cold and hungry when I took the photo above?  Do you care that it’s not just one photo, but a series of photos that were stitched together in Photoshop to make the picture above.  Again, not really.

Clouds and Storm 090416

Thunderstorm over Longmont.  September 2016

This photo was taken from US Route 36 near Boulder, CO.  I stood just off the road and took the picture as many cars went by.  The cars were traveling quite fast and buffeted me as they went past.  If was quite nervous about standing there, but I stayed until I got a reasonable representation in my photo.

Does any of that change the photo or how you feel about it.  It’s one of my favorites because the cloud looks quite ominous and it’s easy to see the rain coming down. It’s the picture that matters, not the way that I took the photo.
